La gerbera, conocida también como margarita de Transvaal, crece libre en la naturaleza de las praderas y sabanas de Sudáfrica y Sudamérica en particular. Como la gerbera pertenece a la vasta familia de las asteráceas, parece una versión más colorida de la bonita margarita silvestre.

Esta planta fue bautizada en 1884 por Robert Jameson, un botánico escocés, en honor a su amigo Traugott Gerber, un naturalista alemán.

En el siglo XX, la planta se introdujo en Europa y Norteamérica y enseguida cosechó una gran popularidad como flor cortada para los ramos y composiciones florales. En la actualidad, la alegre gerbera ha conquistado todos los continentes y se cultiva en todo el mundo.
